How Do You Know If You Have a Herniated Disc?

herniated disc treatment
Ask For A Free Spinal Decompression Consultation

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco since 1992.

Herniated discs in the low back are fairly common. They are less common in the neck.  Usually there is low back pain or sciatica…but you can also have a herniated or bulging disc and not even know it.

That’s right…many will live and die with herniated discs and they never have any symptoms.  In fact, some herniated discs in the neck or back will heal on their own.

Most of the time it is low back or neck pain, sciatica,  arm pain, numbness or tingling or weakness that causes a herniated disc patient to seek treatment.  There are other causes of these symptoms so it’s not always a cervical or lumbar disc herniation.

Some of the other musculoskeletal conditions that can cause these symptoms are neck or back sprain/strain, subluxation, misalignment, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, stenosis, and more.

A disc herniation is not the end of the world either. In fact, most of the time a cervical or lumbar disc bulge or herniation will respond favorably to convention chiropractic or physical therapy. In the event some extra help is needed, many chiropractors offer nonsurgical spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat disc herniations naturally without drugs or surgery. Sometimes the combination of chiropractic and the DRX9000 is just what’s needed.

As far as confirming the presence of a disc herniation…the MRI is the gold standard. Typically, we order an MRI to quantify the problem and help dictate the treatment plan. Sometimes there are multiple levels of involvement which requires more treatment. Sometimes the severity is minimal which takes less time. All cases are different.

In addition, not everyone can qualify medically for spinal decompression treatment. Because of this we offer a complimentary consultation which we can do in person or by phone to see if you are a good candidate for care.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.  Make sure to ask for the complimentary consultation.

Can a Herniated Disc Heal Itself?

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Chronic Back Pain

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 23 years.

Herniated discs in the low back and neck are fairly common.  In fact, many of us have a herniated disc and don’t even know it. That’s right…you can have a lumbar or cervical disc herniation and have no symptoms.

On the other hand, you can have a disc herniation that is causing severe low back pain and sciatica or neck and arm pain. The pain can be so bad that you are unable to function in a normal manner. It just depends on the nature of the the disc herniation and how it is contacting your spinal cord or nerves.

It is now known that disc herniations and disc bulges (a form of a herniation) can heal on their own. Some never even cause symptoms Other times, the disc can become positioned in such a way that the body is unable to fix it and outside intervention is necessary.

The most effective treatment foe a disc bulge or herniation is traditional chiropractic. Some medical doctors will scare patients into thinking that gentle chiropractic could make the problem worse or even cause permanent damage. This is very rare and most chiropractors will know when they should stay away.

What happens most of the time is a very favorable outcome. Sometimes this can happen right away and other times it may take a while. Each case is different.

In the rare event that chiropractic is unable to deliver a favorable outcome we have a “next-step”…Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression with the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression systems are designed and built to treat lumbar and cervical disc herniations nonsurgically. The treatment is very safe, gentle and effective. Sometimes a combination of chiropractic and spinal decompression works best.

Spinal decompression is not new. We have been offering it in San Francisco for over 10 years.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

What Does Spinal Decompression Costs?

We have been providing treatment for bulging and herniated discs in San Francisco for 23 years now.

About 10 years ago, after considerable research, we decided to add nonsurgical spinal decompression to our clinic so that we could better treat these conditions. The results have been outstanding.   The machine we use is the DRX9000. The protocol for spinal decompression is 20 one hour sessions over 6-8 weeks. We were the first to offer spinal decompression with the DRX9000 in San Francisco and our cost at that time was $6000-$10,000 depending on the severity of the condition,  level of treatment and adjunctive therapies involved.

DRX9000 Lumbar Decompresion

That was then and this is now. Now there are many more spinal decompression machines and the machines costs less…so the price has come down. Our prices these days for lumbar or cervical spinal disc decompression is $3500-$6000 depending on what you need. Quite a bit cheaper. Plus, we are much better at it…it’s an art. Over the past 10 years we have performed tens of thousands of spinal decompression sessions on thousands of patients. We are pretty good at this…and experience matters! Some of the conditions we treat are lumbar and cervical disc herniations, disc bulges, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and facet syndrome. The most common symptoms associated with these conditions are low back pain, sciatica, leg pain, numbness, tingling, burning, aching, neck pain, arm pain, weakness, night pain. There has never been a better time to consider spinal decompression therapy. We reserve the machine for your appointments so there is no waiting, and we validate your parking at the Embarcadero Center. It’s super easy and efficient.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Do Spinal Decompression Results Last?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

About 10 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression therapy into our herniated disc treatment protocols. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

The DRX9000 is designed and built to treat herniated and bulging lumbar discs naturally. We also have a DRX9000c cervical decompression system. This enables us to treat herniated discs in the neck.

Over the past 10 years we have treated thousands of patients with spinal decompression. Many were scheduled for back or neck  surgery. We are proud to say that the results during this time have been outstanding. Most of the time we are able to achieve favorable outcomes and about half of our decompression patients continue on with some sort of maintenance program.

So…Do spinal decompression results last?

For the most part YES! As long as you do not return back do the unhealthy lifestyle habits that caused the condition to develop in the first place. Most herniated discs develop over time. Some are traumatic or due to sports or auto injuries, but the majority are because of things like poor posture or ergonomics, obesity, stress, bad shoes, poor sleeping habits, etc. Things you have control over.

Once the spine becomes damaged and misaligned it starts to cause abnormal wear and tear on the spinal disc, which can then lead to disc bulging and herniation.

The DRX9000 re-positions the disc, enlarges the disc space, re-hydrates the disc, strengthens the spinal ligaments and muscles, and elongates the spine. Typically the results are permanent, but many that lead active lifestyles wish to be proactive and have a decompression session here and there to help ensure things stay where they are. This is optional and totally up to the patient. Maintenance care visit frequencies range between 4-12 sessions per year.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Over the past 10 years or so we have helped thousands of herniated cervical and lumbar disc patients return to more active lifestyles with the DRX9000. Many have been able to avoid back or neck surgery as well.

Sure, there are always some that do not respond favorably to decompression therapy but they are the minority. What typically happens is that patients end up a lot better than they were and are glad they did the treatment. Some have a complete resolution of symptoms.

As we near the end of the spinal decompression protocol, which is typically around 20 sessions performed over a 6-8 week period, we discuss with the patient the option of continuing on with some sort of ongoing maintenance plan. About 50% choose to do so.

Is DRX9000 spinal decompression maintenance necessary? In some cases YES, in other cases we just don’t know. When we just don’t know, we recommend that our patients listen to their body and call for a decompression session “as needed”. This seems to work very well.

Some patients never need the decompression machine again and choose to keep their spine healthy with chiropractic, exercise, stretching, Yoga or Pilates.

So, if we feel you need cervical or lumbar spinal decompression maintenance care, we will tell you. If not, we will teach you how to take care of your new back or neck so that the results last.

The conditions that respond best to cervical or lumbar spinal decompression therapy are bulging or herniated disc in the neck or low back. Degenerative disc disease, Spinal Stenosis, Facet Syndrome, and Failed Back Surgery cases also respond well.

Not all patients can qualify medically for decompression therapy. The best thing to do is research online, find a spinal decompression doctor near you with lots of experience (this matters most) and make an appointment to find out if you are a good candidate.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District, or have the ability to stay for a month or two, you can see us.

To schedule an appointment at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.

Cervical Spinal Decompression in San Francisco

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

The cervical disc decompression machine we own and operate is the DRX9000c. The DRX9000c is fully computerized and has a built-in biofeedback mechanism that senses the herniated disc patient’s response to the treatment and makes adjustments accordingly.

The cervical decompression system is able to target a specific spinal disc in the neck, such as the C5/6 disc because the computer adjusts the angle of pull according to which disc in the neck is being treated.

Many chiropractors, physical therapists, and medical doctors claim to offer spinal decompression, but it is nothing more than a glorified traction machine. Our spinal decompression system which includes the DRX9000 (lumbar machine) and the DRX9000c (cervical machine) costs over $150,000.

So make sure you do your homework.

In addition, just because a chiropractor or medical clinic has a DRX9000 or DRX9000c, it does not mean they know what to do with it. It takes years of clinical experience and operation to learn how to incorporate it into an overall lumbar and cervical disc herniation repair strategy and protocol.

We have performed over 12,000 decompression sessions on thousands of patients. In fact, we were the first to offer the DRX9000c to San Francisco.

So there you go…if you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc in the neck or feel you may have one and do not want surgery, you may be a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression to the cervical spine with the DRX9000c.

To find out if you are a candidate for cervical spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

PS: We also offer physical therapy and medical case management at our sister clinic Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. a few blocks away.

Cervical Disc Herniation?

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

We have been providing  treatment for herniated cervical discs in San Francisco for over 22 years.

Typically, patients will present with neck, arm, or hand pain. There can be associated numbness, tingling or weakness in the upper extremities. Sometimes there is no neck pain at all, just arm or hand pain. It is not uncommon for a herniated disc in the neck to be misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome.

So how do you know if you have a herniated cervical disc?

Well, the gold standard for diagnosing a herniated disc is a MRI.

Many of our spinal decompression patients come to us with MRI in hand looking for nonsurgical solutions to their problem. Other times, we end up ordering the MRI after conservative chiropractic fails to deliver results.

We have a “next step” if chiropractic does not achieve a favorable outcome with cervical disc herniation. Our next step is nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000c. The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat herniated discs in the neck non-surgically. The results are outstanding.

We have been incorporating cervical disc decompression into our herniated disc treatment protocol for about 9 years now. In the event decompression is not successful, which is rare, the patient is left whole and can explore other treatment options, including neck surgery.

To find out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical cervical disc treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Arm Pain Causes and Cures

Arm Pain treatment san francisco
The Neck and Arm Pain Connection

We have been providing natural solutions for neck, arm and hand pain in San Francisco for over 20 years in the Financial District.

Arm Pain has many causes from repetitive strain injuries (RSI) to herniated and bulging discs in the neck. If you are someone that spends the majority of your day at a desk in front of a computer (like most of our patients) yo are prone to abnormal wear and tear on the cervical spine (neck), shoulders, arms and hands.

If you have poor posture. either from hereditary predisposition or acquired from poor sleeping habits, ergonomics or injury, you are prone to disc bulges and disc herniations which can lead to pinched nerves in the neck. Pinched nerves in the neck is a primary cause of arm pain.

Arm pain usually presents with either hand pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, numbness in the hands, weakness of grip, or night pain. Arm pain can also present as a stand alone symptom.

The cures for arm pain vary depending on the cause. One thing you should know. Rarely is the cause a “Motrin” deficiency.  When you take a pain killer for arm pain or any type of pain, all you are doing is masking the problem. Pain is a symptom not a condition.

Chiropractic is probably your best bet for arm pain. A chiropractor can examine you to uncover the cause of the arm pain and provide drug-less, nonsurgical solutions on the spot like chiropractic adjustments, massage, ice, and deep tissue laser therapy.

If your arm pain is from a herniated or bulging disc in the neck, then a chiropractor may use nonsurgical spinal decompression to the cervical spine. The machine we use is the DRX9000c. Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat disc bulges, herniations and spinal stenosis naturally.

If you have arm pain and would like to find out if you are a candidate for care please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation. Go here for more info on arm pain treatment in San Francisco.

How much decompression do you need?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression with the DRX9000 and DRX9000c to the San Francisco Financial District for over 8 years now to thousands of patients. One of the most important things we have learned is that everyone responds differently.

Spinal decompression therapy is a tool and it’s not a Magic Bullet…it requires weeks and sometimes months of initial treatment to achieve favorable outcomes. And favorable outcomes are not always a complete resolution of symptoms. Mostly, patients are just a lot better than they were and are happy with the treatment…many avoiding surgery.

Initially, the manufacturers protocol calls for 20 session of decompression, followed by 10 minutes of electronic muscle stimulation and 10 minutes of ice. Usually this is good enough. But in some cases it’s not and we need to do more. Usually, we realize this in the beginning and build more visits into the treatment program. We can always adjust up or down as the treatment unfolds.

Once we start some people begin to feel better immediately…some feel worse. And everything in between. It really does not matter how a patient responds when we start it’s where they end up when we finish.

Decompression therapy is physical and the body needs to adapt to these new forces and to the spine and discs moving into a more normal position. As the treatment progresses and we begin to incorporate exercises into the mixes there is more potential for soreness. in fact, patients tell us they feel much better from less nerve pain but the muscles soreness is still there…kind of like the soreness you get from working out…a good sore.

Then, at the end, depending on how you progressed and the nature and severity of your problem, and your overall health, we may want to do some more DRX session or a combination of chiropractic, exercise and decompression.

Our spinal decompression doctors work with our clinic director to create custom treatment plans based on individual needs. Some DRX9000 patients choose ongoing maintenance care of various frequencies and some just come in when they feel the need. We work together to find what’s best for you.

The first step in the decompression process is to find out if the DRX9000 makes sense for you.  To schedule a complimentary consultation to see if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225.

Disc Bulges and Herniations: Most of Us Have Them

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

Disc Bulges and Disc Herniations are Common. That’s right. If we were to randomly select 100 people off the street and perform a diagnostic MRI to their lumbar spines, 60%+ would reveal disc bulges or disc herniations.

And most would not even have any symptoms or loss of function. But some would have severe low back pain and sciatica and be unable to function normally.

Heck, 80% or more of us will have a bout of severe back pain at least once in our life. And the #1 predisposing factor to chronic back pain is previous back pain. Back pain is epidemic.

Some experts believe discs are becoming injured all the time and the body is repairing these injuries itself. In fact, research suggests that it is best to wait and there is no real advantage to having QUICK low back surgery when it is determined a person has a herniated disc in the low back. It may heal on it’s own and there are nonsurgical treatments now to speed up the process or help initiate the process when the body is unable to.

BUT…just like the immune system is always battling germs and fighting disease (and some still get sick)…in some people the disc herniations do not repair themselves and they DO cause symptoms and loss of function….sometimes severe.  From my studies this occurs about 15% of the time and still amounts to a very large number of people. WHY?

Well…the discs get lodged and displaced in a certain way that puts pressure on the delicate spinal cord and nerve fibers and the body is unable to fix it. Then, the immune system attacks the area as if it were an enemy in a war over and over to prevent further harm (the inflammation process). The muscles go into spasms to protect the injured disc and restrict the motion that the disc needs to take in nutrients and waste products. The chain reaction can be devastating to some. The condition becomes chronic (over 90 days) and continues to degenerate until the nerve pressure can be removed.

Does this require surgery? Maybe…but maybe not!

There is a treatment called nonsurgical spinal decompression that is done on a machine that is designed and built to repair disc bulges and disc herniations in the low back and neck. The disc decompression machine we use in San Francisco is the DRX9000.

Just like a “respirator” helps the lungs to breath until they can do it on their own, a “spinal decompression machine” does the same thing for the spinal discs. The decompression process mimics the natural motion of the spine and helps to unlock the herniated discs and relocate them to a more normal position.

Now this does not happen overnight…it takes 20 one hour visits or more and a lot of effort by the patient and doctor. It is NOT a “magic bullet”. What it IS is the most technologically advanced nonsurgical treatment for herniated and bulging disc available in the marketplace today.

Our Spinal Decompression Clinic in San Francisco has been offering the DRX9000 to herniated disc patients as a surgical alternative for almost 10 years now. We introduced San Francisco to spinal decompression and we have helped thousands and thousands of patients avoid back surgery and return to more normal lives.

To find out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a “complimentary consultation”. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center in the Financial District where we are located.
