How Do You Know If You Have a Herniated Disc?

herniated disc treatment
Ask For A Free Spinal Decompression Consultation

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco since 1992.

Herniated discs in the low back are fairly common. They are less common in the neck.  Usually there is low back pain or sciatica…but you can also have a herniated or bulging disc and not even know it.

That’s right…many will live and die with herniated discs and they never have any symptoms.  In fact, some herniated discs in the neck or back will heal on their own.

Most of the time it is low back or neck pain, sciatica,  arm pain, numbness or tingling or weakness that causes a herniated disc patient to seek treatment.  There are other causes of these symptoms so it’s not always a cervical or lumbar disc herniation.

Some of the other musculoskeletal conditions that can cause these symptoms are neck or back sprain/strain, subluxation, misalignment, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, stenosis, and more.

A disc herniation is not the end of the world either. In fact, most of the time a cervical or lumbar disc bulge or herniation will respond favorably to convention chiropractic or physical therapy. In the event some extra help is needed, many chiropractors offer nonsurgical spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat disc herniations naturally without drugs or surgery. Sometimes the combination of chiropractic and the DRX9000 is just what’s needed.

As far as confirming the presence of a disc herniation…the MRI is the gold standard. Typically, we order an MRI to quantify the problem and help dictate the treatment plan. Sometimes there are multiple levels of involvement which requires more treatment. Sometimes the severity is minimal which takes less time. All cases are different.

In addition, not everyone can qualify medically for spinal decompression treatment. Because of this we offer a complimentary consultation which we can do in person or by phone to see if you are a good candidate for care.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.  Make sure to ask for the complimentary consultation.

Can a Herniated Disc Heal Itself?

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Chronic Back Pain

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 23 years.

Herniated discs in the low back and neck are fairly common.  In fact, many of us have a herniated disc and don’t even know it. That’s right…you can have a lumbar or cervical disc herniation and have no symptoms.

On the other hand, you can have a disc herniation that is causing severe low back pain and sciatica or neck and arm pain. The pain can be so bad that you are unable to function in a normal manner. It just depends on the nature of the the disc herniation and how it is contacting your spinal cord or nerves.

It is now known that disc herniations and disc bulges (a form of a herniation) can heal on their own. Some never even cause symptoms Other times, the disc can become positioned in such a way that the body is unable to fix it and outside intervention is necessary.

The most effective treatment foe a disc bulge or herniation is traditional chiropractic. Some medical doctors will scare patients into thinking that gentle chiropractic could make the problem worse or even cause permanent damage. This is very rare and most chiropractors will know when they should stay away.

What happens most of the time is a very favorable outcome. Sometimes this can happen right away and other times it may take a while. Each case is different.

In the rare event that chiropractic is unable to deliver a favorable outcome we have a “next-step”…Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression with the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression systems are designed and built to treat lumbar and cervical disc herniations nonsurgically. The treatment is very safe, gentle and effective. Sometimes a combination of chiropractic and spinal decompression works best.

Spinal decompression is not new. We have been offering it in San Francisco for over 10 years.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

What Does Spinal Decompression Costs?

We have been providing treatment for bulging and herniated discs in San Francisco for 23 years now.

About 10 years ago, after considerable research, we decided to add nonsurgical spinal decompression to our clinic so that we could better treat these conditions. The results have been outstanding.   The machine we use is the DRX9000. The protocol for spinal decompression is 20 one hour sessions over 6-8 weeks. We were the first to offer spinal decompression with the DRX9000 in San Francisco and our cost at that time was $6000-$10,000 depending on the severity of the condition,  level of treatment and adjunctive therapies involved.

DRX9000 Lumbar Decompresion

That was then and this is now. Now there are many more spinal decompression machines and the machines costs less…so the price has come down. Our prices these days for lumbar or cervical spinal disc decompression is $3500-$6000 depending on what you need. Quite a bit cheaper. Plus, we are much better at it…it’s an art. Over the past 10 years we have performed tens of thousands of spinal decompression sessions on thousands of patients. We are pretty good at this…and experience matters! Some of the conditions we treat are lumbar and cervical disc herniations, disc bulges, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and facet syndrome. The most common symptoms associated with these conditions are low back pain, sciatica, leg pain, numbness, tingling, burning, aching, neck pain, arm pain, weakness, night pain. There has never been a better time to consider spinal decompression therapy. We reserve the machine for your appointments so there is no waiting, and we validate your parking at the Embarcadero Center. It’s super easy and efficient.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Over the past 10 years or so we have helped thousands of herniated cervical and lumbar disc patients return to more active lifestyles with the DRX9000. Many have been able to avoid back or neck surgery as well.

Sure, there are always some that do not respond favorably to decompression therapy but they are the minority. What typically happens is that patients end up a lot better than they were and are glad they did the treatment. Some have a complete resolution of symptoms.

As we near the end of the spinal decompression protocol, which is typically around 20 sessions performed over a 6-8 week period, we discuss with the patient the option of continuing on with some sort of ongoing maintenance plan. About 50% choose to do so.

Is DRX9000 spinal decompression maintenance necessary? In some cases YES, in other cases we just don’t know. When we just don’t know, we recommend that our patients listen to their body and call for a decompression session “as needed”. This seems to work very well.

Some patients never need the decompression machine again and choose to keep their spine healthy with chiropractic, exercise, stretching, Yoga or Pilates.

So, if we feel you need cervical or lumbar spinal decompression maintenance care, we will tell you. If not, we will teach you how to take care of your new back or neck so that the results last.

The conditions that respond best to cervical or lumbar spinal decompression therapy are bulging or herniated disc in the neck or low back. Degenerative disc disease, Spinal Stenosis, Facet Syndrome, and Failed Back Surgery cases also respond well.

Not all patients can qualify medically for decompression therapy. The best thing to do is research online, find a spinal decompression doctor near you with lots of experience (this matters most) and make an appointment to find out if you are a good candidate.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District, or have the ability to stay for a month or two, you can see us.

To schedule an appointment at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.

Spinal Decompression or Back Surgery for a Herniated Disc?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Many herniated disc patients are told they need back surgery. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. How do they know for sure?

Well, welcome to the life of a spinal decompression doctor. This is what we are dealing with every day. I would like to give you my take on the situation.

In my opinion, a herniated disc patient should NOT rush to have back surgery. Because once they do, in many cases, the will be permanently disqualified from ever trying nonsurgical spinal decompression.

In addition, many herniated discs will repair naturally in time. In fact, they say that more people than not are actually walking around with bulging and herniated discs and do not even know they have them…and never will. Not all patients with a herniated disc in the low back experience low back pain or sciatica.

That’s right, the majority of lumbar disc herniations do not even cause symptoms.

But in certain cases, the disc is herniated in such a way that the body is unable to re-position it naturally or heal it such that it does not interfere with a person’s life. In situations like this conservative chiropractic care can be very effective.

There is however a subset of all herniated and bulging disc patients that do not respond to chiropractic, drugs, cortisone, physical therapy or anything for that matter. Some of these patients are suffering daily with sever low back pain and sciatica. many are unable to sleep and end up taking various kinds of medications day in and day out. Life is miserable.

These are the type of back pain patients that have a tendency to want to have surgery…they will try anything. In my clinical experience this type of patient represents about 10-15% of all herniated disc patients and is still a lot of people.

These are the perfect candidates for spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000 but there are many fine decompression systems out there.

Unless it is a medical emergency (rare) or you are disqualified from decompression therapy (rare), I recommend a course of spinal decompression to see if a patient will respond. Disc decompression is very safe and gentle. It takes about 6 weeks (20 sessions) to work through the protocol and make a determination if the treatment was successful.

If the DRX9000 does not achieve a favorable outcome and desired result you are still whole and able to pursue all other treatment options including back surgery.

If you have a spinal fusion you can never try decompression. So, why not try decompression first?

So there you go…that’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth. I have helped hundreds of herniated disc patients avoid surgery…the next one could be YOU!

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Sciatica Treatment in San Francisco

sciatica treatment in san francisco
Sciatica Treatment in SF

We have been providing natural sciatica relief in San Francisco for over 20 years.  We use a combination of chiropractic, spinal decompression, massage, exercise, and deep tissue laser therapy to achieve favorable outcomes in the majority of sciatica cases.

The primary cause of sciatica (leg pain) is a “pinched nerve” in the lumbar spine. The majority of pinched nerves are the result of bulging or herniated lumbar discs. There are other causes of pinched nerves, like degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome. Piriformis Syndrome, spinal and foraminal stenosis, and vertebral subluxations (misalignment’s).

Sciatica may or may not be accompanied by low back pain.

Spinal decompression with the DRX9000 in conjunction with chiropractic or as a stand alone treatment is a very effective sciatica treatment and often provides instant relief. There is also a chance it can cause an increase in symptoms…temporarily. After-all, the treatment is physical, albeit gentle.

If we accept your case there is a very good chance we will achieve favorable results. We do not accept all cases…only those we feel we can help.

Sciatica can be very painful and debilitating and can persist as long as the underlying cause remains. Back surgery is usually not necessary in our opinion in most cases. We recently wrote about this on our  other blog (Low Back Surgery or Chiropractic: Study).

To find out if you are a candidate for sciatica treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Mention this article for a complimentary consultation.

Disc Bulges and Herniations: Most of Us Have Them

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

Disc Bulges and Disc Herniations are Common. That’s right. If we were to randomly select 100 people off the street and perform a diagnostic MRI to their lumbar spines, 60%+ would reveal disc bulges or disc herniations.

And most would not even have any symptoms or loss of function. But some would have severe low back pain and sciatica and be unable to function normally.

Heck, 80% or more of us will have a bout of severe back pain at least once in our life. And the #1 predisposing factor to chronic back pain is previous back pain. Back pain is epidemic.

Some experts believe discs are becoming injured all the time and the body is repairing these injuries itself. In fact, research suggests that it is best to wait and there is no real advantage to having QUICK low back surgery when it is determined a person has a herniated disc in the low back. It may heal on it’s own and there are nonsurgical treatments now to speed up the process or help initiate the process when the body is unable to.

BUT…just like the immune system is always battling germs and fighting disease (and some still get sick)…in some people the disc herniations do not repair themselves and they DO cause symptoms and loss of function….sometimes severe.  From my studies this occurs about 15% of the time and still amounts to a very large number of people. WHY?

Well…the discs get lodged and displaced in a certain way that puts pressure on the delicate spinal cord and nerve fibers and the body is unable to fix it. Then, the immune system attacks the area as if it were an enemy in a war over and over to prevent further harm (the inflammation process). The muscles go into spasms to protect the injured disc and restrict the motion that the disc needs to take in nutrients and waste products. The chain reaction can be devastating to some. The condition becomes chronic (over 90 days) and continues to degenerate until the nerve pressure can be removed.

Does this require surgery? Maybe…but maybe not!

There is a treatment called nonsurgical spinal decompression that is done on a machine that is designed and built to repair disc bulges and disc herniations in the low back and neck. The disc decompression machine we use in San Francisco is the DRX9000.

Just like a “respirator” helps the lungs to breath until they can do it on their own, a “spinal decompression machine” does the same thing for the spinal discs. The decompression process mimics the natural motion of the spine and helps to unlock the herniated discs and relocate them to a more normal position.

Now this does not happen overnight…it takes 20 one hour visits or more and a lot of effort by the patient and doctor. It is NOT a “magic bullet”. What it IS is the most technologically advanced nonsurgical treatment for herniated and bulging disc available in the marketplace today.

Our Spinal Decompression Clinic in San Francisco has been offering the DRX9000 to herniated disc patients as a surgical alternative for almost 10 years now. We introduced San Francisco to spinal decompression and we have helped thousands and thousands of patients avoid back surgery and return to more normal lives.

To find out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a “complimentary consultation”. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center in the Financial District where we are located.

Leg Numbness with No Back Pain?

Have you been experiencing leg numbness or tingling in the leg or legs but you have no back pain? Well, you are not alone as this is a very common finding and symptom of a herniated disc in the low back. This is actually a form of Sciatica.

That’s right…it’s possible to have pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg but have no back pain. The reason for this is that the nerves that exit from the lumbar spine travel down the leg to the foot and carry nerve impulses and chemicals that are responsible for motor (movement) and sensory (what you feel) functions. Any kind of pressure on these nerves from a herniated or bulging lumbar disc and you can feel numbness, pins and needles, hot and cold, or burning sensations.

If the leg numbness in your leg/s persists you should visit a chiropractor or orthopedic doctor to be evaluated for possible lumbar disc pathology.

If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc you should not rush to have back surgery even though it may be recommended as a primary option. The reason for this is that we now know ruptured spinal discs can heal on their own with a little help from a chiropractor or a nonsurgical spinal decompression machine like the DRX9000.

Sure, there are rare situations where surgery is the only option but they are far and few in between. Most of the time it makes sense to try non invasive treatments for herniated disc repair first. And in my experience favorable outcomes are achieved more often than not.

So…if you are experiencing numbness or tingling in the legs (sciatica) and you want to find out if you have a herniated disc make an appointment to see a chiropractor ASAP.

If you live or work or plan on visiting San Francisco in the near future you can come see us.

Is Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression Safe?

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been providing nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy to the lumbar and cervical spine for 8 years now in San Francisco. The machines we use are the DRX9000 lumbar decompression system and the DRX9000c cervical decompression system.

We have performed well over 15,000 sessions during this time and we have never had a patient suffer a serious injury. Sure, we have had patients get sore…in fact, some soreness is expected. Every once in a while someone gets real sore but we are usually able to determine who is at risk and we start off very very light.

The reality is that disc decompression therapy is very safe and gentle. Either it will help you or it wont. But if it doesn’t, which is rare, you are still whole and can explore other treatment options for your herniated discs.

Many surgical procedures involve fusion with cement, wires, screws, etc. If you have one of these surgeries you will be forever disqualified from ever trying spinal decompression therapy. Why not try it first…you can always have surgery?

Heck…even a discectomy, which removes part of the disc…the part that is pressing on the spinal cord or nerve root, does not leave you whole. Your spinal disc is part of your spinal structure. When part of it is removed it alters the entire structure and predisposes you to more problems with other spinal segments later.  This is why so many people that have back or neck surgery need to have more surgery later.

Hey…sometime you just flat out need back or neck surgery…but many times you really don’t. You could have done the DRX9000 or DRX9000c and it would have worked.

So do yourself a favor…if you have a herniated disc in the neck or in the low back that is not responding to medical care, chiropractic, acupuncture, or whatever…or you have been told you need surgery…consider disc decompression first. At least check it out…you might be surprised.

To schedule an appointment for a complimentary consultation at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog.

Spinal Decompression for an L5 Herniated Disc

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. Currently, we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments (if tolerated), nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000, deep tissue laser therapy, core exercises, and lots of TLC.

The L5 spinal disc is in between the L5 lumbar vertebrae and Sacrum. It is the last vertebral disc in the spine and is the most common lumbar disc to herniate and require back surgery.

The L5 lumbar disc is the disc that we apply nonsurgical spinal decompression to most often…and with great success. Even if there are other bulges or herniations in the spine we always target L5-S1 first as many of the other herniations will correct themselves if the primary L5 disc heals and is re-positioned.

Spinal decompression is able to achieve favorable outcomes in most herniated disc patients by doing the following (the machine targets a specific spinal disc level such as L5 by adjusting the angle of pull):

  1. Elongates the spine.
  2. Enlarges the disc space.
  3. Re-hydrated the injured disc.
  4. Re-positions the herniated disc material off the nerves.
  5. Strengthens the spinal ligaments and muscles.
  6. Makes the spine more flexible and “life is motion”.

Spinal decompression patients must first qualify medically for DRX9000 treatment. If you have had fusion surgery or have scoliosis or severe osteoporosis (and other contraindications) you may not qualify. Your doctor will make this determination.

The best thing to do if you have an L5 disc herniation or herniated or bulging disc anywhere else in the low back or neck, is to find a spinal decompression center close to you and see if you qualify for decompression therapy. I would do this before you consider back surgery because you may not need to have it.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation and tour of the DRX9000.
